Hello, I’m Jo…

I live in the suburbs of Brighton at the foot of the South Downs with my two daughters, aged 16 and 11, husband and great dane Nessa. I love it here - being so close to the sea, and the countryside gives me lots of chances to get out into nature.

The Doula Jo Slade Birth, Postnatal, Breastfeeding support

I did my training in 2023, but I have wanted to be a doula long before I even knew what a Doula was! And this desire came from my experiences of my own pregnancies, births, and postnatal periods. Knowing what I know now, I would give birth every day if I could!

As well as soaking up everything I can about birth, breastfeeding, and feminism, I like to relax by crafting, baking, and watching 90-minute disaster movies! I also love a bit of yoga.

And dogs. I could talk for hours about dogs! I have actually taken a basic course in how to become a dog trainer, mainly to help me learn how best to look after my own dog (who is now a 4 year old wonderful gentle giant) I have a pocket permanently filled with dog treats and I would love to meet any doggy family members you have and - if you like - give tips on training and helping them with their own transition to big brother or sister!

I also have experience with blended families, (my own is one) and I understand the sometimes-tricky nuances around family relationships.

Alongside being a Doula, I am also a breastfeeding peer support volunteer at my local hospital. I’ve been doing it for 6 years now and I absolutely love meeting and listening to women and their families and supporting them in starting and sustaining a positive breastfeeding journey. I have wanted for a long time to find a way of further supporting mothers and families through their pregnancies, births, and postnatal periods, and becoming a doula felt like the perfect, holistic way to do this. I love that I can take the time to really tune in to your needs and wishes and help you feel informed, empowered and in control of your own birth!

Doula support is about the mother, and I’m so happy that I can focus on you, and your family, while other professionals are focussing more on your baby.
